An Old Lilac Tree

There’s an old lilac tree

In the backyard of my childhood home

Sometimes it still calls to me

And reminds me it’s okay to feel alone

Sometimes

When the storm clouds come

Learn to let them wash away

The bad times.

There’s a song I used to play

In the car, with the windows down

And even to this day

My knees weaken and my heart stops

As it plays

Sometimes

Life can come around and

Take you by surprise

Sometimes

Love’s an old merry-go-round

That somehow never dies

And sometimes

Even when the odds are telling you

That there’s just no way

You pick up the heavy phone and say

I promise

This time it will be okay.
